The Senate never voted on his nomination. So much has happened in the past two years that many may have forgotten what happened to Merrick Garland in the spring of 2016.

Supreme Court picks have often been controversial. There have been contentious hearings and floor debates and contested votes. But to ignore the nominee entirely, as if no vacancy existed? The court had to convene that October with only eight justices, divided often between the four appointed by Democrats and the four appointed by Republicans. Short-handed, the court deadlocked on a number of issues and declined to hear others.

For his part, McConnell argued that the Democrats had at least contemplated a similar tactic back in 1992, when Obama's vice president, Joe Biden, was chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee and mused about urging President George H.W. Bush to withhold any nominees to the high court until the end of the"political season."

1a Garland could & would have been voted down by a Republican Senate. All McConnell did then was spare us that drama and his fellow republicans the challenge of defending their votes. That is why now is different.

I’m curious what people think of the actual McConnell rule: “Since 1880, no senate has approved the Supreme Court nomination of an opposite party president”. That’s the rule he follows. Is he right or wrong? Any thoughts? Keep in mind events beyond just 2016.

The sky is falling the sky is falling ✨humans are just getting dumber we have now got to a point where we can barely live of the land and we now totally dedicated to living of the man(politicians)

They could could have Merrick Garland update his application and confirm him now.

Whatever. It all started when the DUI, vehicular manslaughtering “lion of the senate” slandered Judge Bork.

Would you have been happier had he not been confirmed following a hearing?

Dear NPR , Who controls Congress ? … see now, there's your Answer !!!

No, it is not relevant now! The Senate and the President are in the same party, so it would be stupid to delay the appointment of a new Supreme Court Justice. All democrats want is the ability to kill as many babies (disproportionately black and brown babies) as possible.

At the end of the day, I would hope that if senatemajldr puts forward POTUS’s nomination for a vote without letting the people decide in November, the KY voters would reward him with a retirement party.

It’s pretty basic folks. The GOP wants a conservative court. They control the senate. They didn’t like Obama’s nominee and blocked it. They will like Trumps and they’ll approve them.

Yes the Republicans still control the Senate

It should not have happened but Moscow Mitch McConnell decided to break with tradition and select a Trump nominee.

Actually, you forgot about what happened with Justice Clarence Thomas, Robert Bork, Brett Kavanaugh, the democrat's smear campaigns, and SCOTUS nominee filibusters, and why it's relevant now. Got propaganda, NPR?
