UN expert Agnes Callamard dismisses Saudi court ruling in the case of journalist Jamal Khashoggi's murder, while Khashoggi's fiancee calls the ruling a 'farce'

The reactions come as a Saudi court overturned five death sentences over journalist Jamal Khashoggi's murder in a final ruling that has jailed eight defendants to between seven and 20 years, according to state media.

None of the defendants were named in what was described as the final court ruling on the killing, which had sparked international outcry. The family's pardon spared the lives of five unnamed people sentenced to death over the 2018 murder in a December court ruling, which was lambasted by human rights groups after two top aides to the crown prince were exonerated.

Khashoggi had been living in exile in the United States for about a year as the crown prince oversaw a crackdown in Saudi Arabia on human rights activists, writers and critics of the kingdom’s devastating war in Yemen.

Absolute power corrupts absolutely. We will continue to wait for justice. And we won't stop paying attention.
