New: A federal judge in California has ordered the Trump administration to temporarily stop wrapping up in-person counting efforts for the 2020 census.

. The order is expected to remain in effect until a court hearing is held on Sept. 17 for the plaintiffs' request for a court order that would require counting to continue through the end of October.

A coalition that includes civil rights groups and local governments, as well as the Navajo Nation and the Gila River Indian Community in Arizona, is trying to force the Census Bureau to abandon a last-minute schedule change that cuts counting a month short to end on Sept. 30.The bureau had previously been working towards ending all counting efforts on Oct. 31 to make up for delays caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

Without that extra time, the challengers are concerned the bureau will not be able to adequately conduct the constitutionally mandated count of every person living in the country, especially among people of color, immigrants and other historically undercounted groups.

Mayor, illegal immigrants should not be counted. Why can't you understand that. They shouldn't be here they broke out laws.

I know census workers in LA who don’t bother counting illegals in the hood. They love deleting the Mexican names from the system

Another Judge appointed by, you guessed it, Barack H Obama, what a surprise!!

The Lord bless America and our President/Vice President against the pathological radical liberal democrats.

Ignore the judge

Otherwise what’s the point? Keep counting till it’s done!

NPR fails to mention that California stands to lose House representation if non-citizens are excluded in the census.

I have friends and family that completed the census online and they keep getting contacted by census workers asking them to complete the census or wanting to complete the census with them. It's ridiculous.

I want to know why a judge thinks he has the power to order such a thing... As in a judge ordered the conclusion of a recount in FL during the Bush era. How is it that they believe they have the power to do this? I want to know...

I'm just a fluffy ball of orange cuddly hair but Trump is determined to morph us into the Titanic 🚢🆘🙀😿 catreplies

Unwrapping up.

Groups ask for restraining order to stop census wind-downA day after the U.S. Census Bureau said that it has already taken steps to wind down operations for the 2020 census, a coalition of cities, counties and civil rights groups is trying to stop the statistical agency in its tracks. The coalition asked a federal judge in San Jose on Thursday to issue a temporary restraining order stopping the Census Bureau from taking any further actions toward ending the once-a-decade head count of every U.S. resident. The coalition is asking a judge in a lawsuit to make the Census Bureau restore its previous deadline for finishing the census to the end of October, instead of using a revised schedule to end operations at the end of September.
