Two recent court rulings have slammed attempts by spouses to subject their wives to financial battering

Using “trusts” and other financial shenanigans to avoid payouts to spouses in accrual claims in divorce proceedings have been condemned in two recent high court judgments, highlighting the “vulnerability” of women who are “emotionally and financially” battered by their estranged spouses.

In one, Western Cape High Court judge Gayaat Salie-Hlophe referred to the “power imbalance” that resulted from historical gender-based inequalities.
