A 26-year-old from Chile was attacked by a hostel worker as she washed her coffee cup at a communal kitchen, before running to a local shopping centre for help, a Far North Queensland court hears.

A 26-year-old tourist who was stabbed in broad daylight tried to fight off her attacker with a coffee cup in the kitchen of a backpacker's hostel in Cairns, a court has heard.

They had travelled to Cairns almost immediately, where they checked in to the hostel on a Saturday night. He said that all changed on the Monday morning, when the alleged victim lined up behind Mr Moodoonuthia in the communal kitchen, to wash her coffee cup at the sink."Out of shock or reflex, she swung the cup at him, she wacked him in the head with the cup she was going to wash up," Mr Crane said.He said the pair argued and Mr Moodoonuthia allegedly asked the woman, 'Do you want to fight?' before repeatedly punching her in the face, breaking her nose.

He said Mr Moodoonuthia was heard saying the victim "needed to be punished" and rifled through a kitchen drawer, where he grabbed a 30-centimetre knife, before running after the women.
