Opinion | Steve Vladeck: 'To put the point a bit more bluntly, our tax dollars should be funding government operations, not political campaigns that we may or may not support.'

? “Blah, blah, blah. If you’re trying to silence me through the Hatch Act, it’s not going to work. Let me know when the jail sentence starts.” Echoing Conway, acting White House chief of staff Mark Meadows waved his arms at the Hatch Act just Wednesday morning, saying thatThe problem with the Hatch Act and similar statutes is not that “nobody cares”; millions of federal employees are still endlessly drilled each year on how to separate politics from work.

Echoing Conway, acting White House chief of staff Mark Meadows waved his arms at the Hatch Act just Wednesday morning, saying that “nobody outside of the Beltway really cares.” Much of the fault for that starts with President Donald Trump, who has led by example when it comes to holding his associates and supporters to the same standard of “law and order” he demands from everyone else. But the fault is not his alone; it also lies at least partially with Congress, which has given far too much responsibility to the executive branch to check itself, assuming that political pressure would ensure fidelity to ethics laws.

When a federal employee violates the Hatch Act, the consequences are usually administrative. For most federal employees, disputes over violations end up before the Merit Systems Protection Board — an independent agency

MeghnaWBUR THINK This Tommy guy on air right now is a clown, he can’t name a reason he isn’t voting Trump says it would take too long but then goes on a crazy hypothetical fantasy.

THINK This administration has turned OUR HOUSE into a thug alley. Did no one hear when our so called President said “I will own the Presidency “? Then add the many years that he will be elected. This is Putin Jr. trying to take the White House. Open your eyes.

MeghnaWBUR THINK A very bright man… But a dyed in the wool Democrat from a family of Democrats. Again, a brilliant guy… But quelle surprise! His reasoning almost always leads to the same conclusion, vote Democrat

steve_vladeck THINK Don’t both sides us with this bullshit. This is the Republicans choice to just stop upholding any laws that might hurt Donald Trump’s feelings. The only tool we have to rein this in is the ballot box (assuming the Republicans don’t hide them) and the press, and y’all suck.

steve_vladeck THINK I understand why 'partisanship' is used in persuasive arguments, but it does miss an important underlying truth.

THINK Gee, trump's own older sister says he 'has no principles' and 'you can't trust him', so why should we. Maryanne Trump Barry had a lot more to say about donald trump, all on tape. Maryanne NOT voting for trump, 'doing everything she can to elect Biden'. His own sister!

THINK That breakdown has occurred only only one side of the aisle. Dems, God bless them, still insist on playing by the rules.

THINK as partianship is NBC's business model... YadaYadaYada

THINK The SenateGOP HouseGOP have demonstrated openly and without a doubt that they are no different than any of the people and Fascist Governments we have fought through our history. They are and will be what they showed us. TRAITORS TO THE CONSTITUTION & THE NATION. CNN MSNBC

THINK Used to be church and state. Now it’s right or left.

Not, this is not legal. The ceremony has to be performed by a judge. This is a Circo

Republicans believe rules are for other people.

I will gladly be blunt with you propagandist scumbags if you wish. What say you?

Don't worry Steve, realDonaldTrump donates his salary to government operations paying it forward to the taxpayers!

Well there is a lockdown on citizenship right now. Under Trump. So is this eve a legal ceremony? Nope. Don’t think so.

So many sweeping references to HatchAct violations, but no statute citations accompanying specific examples of the alleged violations. Perhaps because the actual text is far more nuanced than the hype.

I know trumps not who I voted for and will never vote for,Joe Biden for President not monkey brains.

Congrats!

This is a good Public Relations message for people who believe in following the law, but not the people NBC supports. I see why your upset.

The Hatch Act must be implemented to the fullest extent of the law. No one is exempt from its just purposes & intents.

So why does Planned Parenthood get out tax dollars then? That’s not something many millions of Americans agree with, but it still happens. 🙄

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha! EAT IT!

Trump is a criminal!

So, planned parenthood shouldn't be getting tax dollars right?

Obama and other Democrats have done the same in the past. But now since its Trump, the whiny little cry baby b!tches have to create a fuss about it. Can't wait to see the reaction when Trump wins his second term. VoteRedToSaveAmerica2020

realDonaldTrump think because his the president, his above the law and he has his obedient soldiers to defend him no matter what. BidenHarrisToSaveAmerica biden2020landslide

That’s a FACT

Wow, you know liberals are desperate when they are acting like Trump accepting the nomination from the WH during COVID is some huge issue.

Would a republican be okay with Obama doing what Trump did?
