Consumers continue to battle airlines over canceled tickets. At stake are literally billions of dollars—and likely lasting animosity toward airlines over punitive policies, writes MiddleSeat.

Refunds delayed and denied. Vouchers worth thousands of dollars that have already expired, or are so rule-bound they’re useless. Interminable telephone holds, unanswered emails and complaints ignored.

AirEuropa holding over 4000 usd for me, they gave me vouchers that i'm forced to use on limited and overpriced tickets, and the icing on the cake is that they took a fee for the cancellation when airports were closed so it was impossible to fly!

This is true. Trip to Italy in May scrubbed due to Covid. Now United and the 3rd party who sold tickets, Business-class, refuse to not only refund, but won’t give me the voucher! I gave a bad review on line. Business class said they would send the voucher if I changed the review!

They are not withholding refunds, they don’t have the money to refund. That money is already in the pockets of shareholders, so sorry.

Not just airlines!! Major third party sites for hotel stays, too!! 🤬

united, dagenmcdowell United refuses to refund us for trips canceled as well. We don’t want vouchers, we’re unemployed! We could sure use that money back!

Had 3 flights scheduled for 2020 on Delta -all 3 refunds received. FlyDelta

Is there a billion with M?😬

Weirdly you have a photo showing AlItalia which is bankrupt and being run (last I heard) by the Italian govt. I'm sure this is a difficult moment for both the companies and the trip cancellers.

Laws have no meaning in this day and age. Look at arsonist, looters, and even insurrectionist Illegal spying by Comey, Biden/Obama et al on Trump campaign. Good luck with the refunds!!!

Ooo that’s not right ! They have the money give it back I’m sure the people can use it now .

Could it be because they're on the verge of going bust? Be patient people, let them get back in business first.

Yep, Southwest nailed me for $800

It took Emirates 4.5 months to repay me what they owed me here in the UK, and they didn't even apologise!

MiddleSeat Timely article - thanks. I've been going through my own battle with lufthansa and trying to get my refund for a flight cancelled more than 4 months ago. On the rare case where I get a response, they ask me to be patient. Seriously?

MiddleSeat No joke! We had to cancel international trip - 4 RT tickets and AmericanAir changed flight from direct to non direct - had us flying west then East - changed equipment - an no guarantee for covid policies! Took weeks calls/tweets to get refund!

MiddleSeat Not in Europe only in stupid America

MiddleSeat

MiddleSeat No more bailouts for airlines until they treat their passengers humanely, with respect, and act like a real business.

MiddleSeat and tax payers should not be subsidizing the airlines - amazing how the righties have a problem supporting health care and food for humans but have no problems supporting oil and airlines oh and let's not forget millionaire farmers suffering from China sanctions

MiddleSeat And priceline is so desperate they help the airlines with their bait & switch tactics. I say fk them all. Thank GOD for elonmusk and other disrupters. MEGA opportunities to disrupt the sh-t show that is the airlines.

MiddleSeat The same airlines that always have their hands out for tax payer bailout cash, anytime the economy hits a speed bump. The animosity is already there.

MiddleSeat Defund the airlines.
