Senior Federal Counsel tells court travel ban imposed on Maria Chin within permissible grounds

Wednesday, 05 Aug 2020 06:58 PM MYT

Senior Federal Counsel Shamsul Bolhassan, who appeared for the Home Minister and Immigration director-general , in his argument to Maria’s lawyer’s Datuk Gurdial Singh Nijar’s submissions in the appeal proceedings, said: He said by relying on a departmental internal circular to prevent the Petaling Jaya Member of Parliament from going overseas in 2016, the respondents had restricted her freedom of speech and assembly enshrined under Article 10 of the Federal Constitution.

He also submitted that the exclusive right of Parliament to impose restrictions on free speech and expression, however, is only valid if it falls under the permissible restrictions such as public order or morality or in the interest of the security of the Federation.
