A challenge to the Government’s greenhouse gas emission plan was upheld in a landmark ruling by the Supreme Court on Friday. The Supreme Court ruled that the Government’s 2017 National Mitigation Plan does not provide enough detail about exactly how the State will reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
The transition includes a reduction in our carbon footprint and transforming into an environmentally sustainable economy by 2050. Clodagh Daly, spokeswoman for Climate Case Ireland, welcomed the Supreme Court ruling, insisting the Government must now “step up” as the “real work” is yet to be done.“Exciting as a legal win may be, the real work now lies in the creation of a transformed National Mitigation Plan – one that guarantees the rapid and dramatic reduction of Ireland’s emissions.
