'If you want to honour John, let’s honour him by revitalizing the law that he was willing to die for.'

It was only fitting for the first Black president to take center stage at Thursday’s memorial service for Lewis. The civil rights titan “I’ve come here today because I, like so many Americans, owe a great debt to John Lewis and his forceful vision of freedom,” Obama began.

“Sometimes we act as if this was inevitable. Imagine two people, Malia’s age, younger than my oldest daughter, on their own, to challenge an entire infrastructure of oppression,” Obama said. “John was only 20 years old, but he pushed all 20 of those years to the center of the table, betting everything, all of it, that his example could challenge centuries of convention and generations of brutal violence and countless daily indignities suffered by African Americans.

“As an old man, he didn’t sit out any fight,” Obama said. “He knew that the march is not over, that the race is not yet won.”President Barack Obama, Rep. John Lewis, and former President George W. Bush hold hands on March 7, 2015, during a ceremony marking the 50th anniversary of the"Bloody Sunday" events at the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama.

“He knew from his own life that progress is fragile, that we have to be vigilant against the darker currents of this country’s history, of our own history, where there are whirlpools of violence and hatred and despair that can always rise again,” Obama said.

Obama picked a wrong venue to make political statement at. It was not appropriate to bombard grieving family or friends of the dead with his political agenda. Media should not have keyed on something so political. The funeral was not Obama's. Who got the most attention in News
