This month marks the 30th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act, considered the most important civil rights law since the 1960s. On throughlineNPR, we look back at how it came to be — and what the disability community is still fighting for.

throughlineNPR You would be surprised to what is considered a disability. Alcoholism and drug addiction to name a few.

throughlineNPR Is that when we stopped calling people handicapped? A handicap is not a disability and shouldn't be seen as one. Being disabled should mean completely helpless. Words matter.

throughlineNPR As mama to a boy with dyslexia, I am thankful for the ADA.

throughlineNPR We should see the ADA expanded to those with hearing loss, damage, and to even prevent same, so that firearms suppressors are excluded from the NFA, and citizens are not only not infringed upon their Second Amendment Rights, but they're not hearing disabled.

throughlineNPR The last important civil rights law we've passed. 30 years ago. I was 6 when this passed. I've spent nearly my entire life never having another right defended. Worst part is: none of this shit is Constitutional yet. We haven't had one of those in almost as long (1992).

And they still have not done anything
