Calls to make pet theft a specific criminal offence rejected by ministers, who say it is covered by existing laws

In a letter to Justice Secretary Robert Buckland, Catherine McKinnell said:"Pet theft is a truly callous crime. It strikes at the heart of families and the evidence is showing that every year the government fails to take action the problem is getting worse.

"However, I should reiterate that stealing a pet is already a criminal offence under the Theft Act 1968 for which the maximum penalty is seven years' imprisonment." Giving evidence to the Petitions Committee in June, editor of Dogs Today magazine, Beverley Cuddy, said instances of pet theft during the coronavirus lockdown had"gone through the roof".

They are animals, you a beast

BBCPolitics It wants something doing about it the number of pets that go missing every week

It's theft... Covered...

For stealing your pet there is only one satisfactory punishment. John Wick knows which one.

I think it’s called dogging

so disappointed....12 dogs stolen in my local area in the last 5 days.....

Any animal thefts or animal abuse needs changing soon. 7 years for animal theft is piss poor. 14 years for animal theft and any animal abuse or neglect 20 years killing of pets 25 years This country is too soft

This is another indication as how far out of touch the scumbag Tories Conservatives are. Pets are not things - they are part of the family and should be treated as such 😡

Does this apply to cat burglars?
