California State University is requiring all students to take an ethnic studies or social justice course in order to graduate. But some faculty oppose the broad measure because it does not ensure students take an actual ethnic studies course.

"This action, by the CSU and for the CSU, lifts ethnic studies to a place of prominence in our curriculum, connects it with the voices and perspectives of other historically oppressed groups, and advances the field by applying the lens of social justice,"."It will empower our students to meet this moment in our nation's history, giving them the knowledge, broad perspectives and skills needed to solve society's most pressing problems.

This is the first major change to CSU's general education requirements in four decades, and it came with its own share of controversy, primarily due to how broad the requirement is. "You have the leadership of the Cal State system that pushed for an ethnic studies and social justice requirement. You then have ethnic studies scholars, the faculty union of the CSU and lawmakers who disagree with what the CSU proposed," Mikhail Zinshteyn, a reporter with

When I graduated it was a 'relevancy' course. I was the only white girl with a bunch of Arab and Jewish boys in a course on the Middle East. It was interesting. Similar requirement has been in place since the 60's.

They took civics out of public schools in many states. We now have less than 24% of high school graduates that even know the three branches of govt. Much less what they do. It doesnt surprise me that this required course is a vehicle for indoctrination.

Dont need a act or sat but will.make you take this course

Have to create some jobs for ethnic studies majors somehow.

Translation: College students will be forced to learn about the very modest accomplishments of non-white peoples. Reasonably intelligent students will be bored out of their minds!

College is already expensive, don’t bother making them take a course to stop being racist. They will always be racist. Their first car was bought by their parents and believe “life is what you make of it” because it was given to them out the cradle.

Idiocy

This is BS forced indoctrination

Stupid

Go to college. Go into major debt. Study lunacy. ? Profit!

docfreeride what's the real story here?

As a CSU graduate, I had to take an upper division writing and social science class to meet my last GE requirements. A few courses fulfilled both requirements, so I took a “Cross-Cultural Aging” class. It could be a viable option going forward. ✅✅

Yes, Duke University is embarrassed for graduating Stephen Miller. And UPenn is embarrassed for graduating Trump from whartons.

Ethnic studies and social justice has an individual look at another’s perspective/experience. True change comes from knowing oneself. The study of cultural intelligence is the better choice to effect societal change. CQ

If CSU adds a required course, they need to delete a different required course. It’s already almost impossible to graduate in 4 years.

Leftist indoctrination, pure and simple.

I oppose it because I don't think kids should waste their time or money on cultural revolution re-education. I don't give a rat's ass what Mao says.

Well...it's California...so there's that.

Who are the professors, please reply...

May as well hand out degrees in Cracker Jack boxes.

Sounds like a woke scold

That’s fascist

society has moved beyond the need for ethics

College is useless. Learn a skill, don’t be in debt to learn dumb shit like this!

I vaguely recall having to take an ethnic studies class in high school. I failed it, and I'm technically ethnically challenged. I did pass home economics, science, and auto mechanics though!😁👍🍌

I don't know if this is necessary.

Humanities is supposed to cover these topics and that is a pre requisite for most degrees.

How about civics and ethics?

Part of going to university is to develop your own perspectives and worldview. Social justice should be a common value held in common culture. Please stop overcompensating for a problem only to make it worse.

I hate liberal arts as required courses. It's not that taking these courses is bad but if you are paying for school you should only have to take courses that are pertinent to your area of study. ex- engineering students should study math, not art.

We all know the real motive is about making money. CSUs and UCs have been pretty implicit about it (planned rising tuition) Even if its not that, I dont think making people take ethnic courses or social justice will help. Im pretty progressive but this is just fucking stupid.

So glad I'm not a student there, or anywhere else where learning takes a back seat to ideology.

Should be required for high school graduation. Not that many go on to University and those who do tend to be more intelligent. It's the rest of the population that needs ethnic AND ethic courses.

defundNPR

I have lost all faith in academia

So, they're not even bothering to keep indoctrination on the DL anymore?

Seriously the worst stat use was in my culturally and linguistically-diverse class. It’s often very biased, and sometimes outright racist stuff.
