For the first time, Australia will commit to reducing Indigenous imprisonment rates, suicides and child removals under an historic Closing the Gap agreement to be unveiled by the Prime Minister today.
The ABC understands the new agreement will also aim to move hundreds of Indigenous adults and children out of prison within a decade. While reductions in family violence and suicide have been included in the 16 new priority areas, the ABC understands more work is needed before they will have a specific target.
This year's Closing the Gap report found just two of those targets were being met, in the areas of early education and Year 12 attainment. But the new policy, which has been in development since 2016, will have an even wider brief.

With zero effect on ‘the gap’. How about this: Eat well, bed early, finish school, find dignity in work, delay procreation until you are at least 20, raise your kids with love and care, obey the law. Gap closed.
