Russian lawmakers late on Tuesday submitted draft legislation that would ban same-sex marriage after voters backed changes to the constitution which define marriage as a union of a man and a woman only.

The changes, championed by President Vladimir Putin, were overwhelmingly approved by voters this month in an exercise that opened the door to Putin staying in power until 2036. Critics said the outcome was falsified, something authorities rejected.

Enshrining a de facto ban in the constitution means any potential successors would find it hard to legalise same-sex marriage even if they wanted to.

Are there gay people in Russia? Absolutely. Is the majority of the culture and populace against the legalisation of same-sex marriage? Absolutely. Conservative nation.

A nation that wants the blessing of God. Sensible.

A very sad day for Russia.

I cannot agree more with this 👍👍

'russian parliament' What a joke. putin dictator

Rainbow happens when god is having gay sex.

A country with ⚽🏀

🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️

now we know why Democrats despise Russia. Few Americans ever learn history of WW-II. (few learn any history these days). The Eastern front is where the Wehrmacht was defeated, only after millions of Russians, Ukrainians and other eastern Europeans died defeating Nazi fascism.

Thumbs up Russia for this movement.

Love doesn't NEED a law to be true, valued, and accepted.... but the citizen culture does in order to be equal. Good luck Russian Gay Fam... 🏳️‍🌈
