The Justice Department has put to death 47-year-old Daniel Lee — marking the first federal execution since 2003. The execution came after a chaotic series of court rulings overnight, including an early morning decision by the Supreme Court.

of William Frederick Mueller and Nancy Ann Mueller and their 8-year-old daughter, Sarah Elizabeth Powell, and recounted Lee's 1999 conviction by a jury in the case.

"Over the four hours it took for this reckless and relentless government to pursue these ends, Daniel Lewis Lee remained strapped to a gurney," Friedman said in a statement."A mere 31 minutes after a court of appeals lifted the last impediment to his execution at the federal government's urging, while multiple motions remained pending, and without notice to counsel, he was executed.

Chief Justice John Roberts concluded Lee and other men on death row had virtually no chance of succeeding in their claim that pentobarbital injections amounted to cruel and unusual punishment under the 8th Amendment.

You forgot to mention that Daniel Lee was a white supremisist who tortured and murdered an entire family, and that his execution was supported by Trump.

Justice is served.

So proud to be an American, where we torture people for hours, and then kill them. How many first world countries still execute? Living in the third world man, so cool. So law and order. MAGA.

EndTheDeathPenalty

Tied to a table for 4 hours while prosecutors argue with others about killing him. Then killing him, then calling his lawyer to notify that you killed him without calling. On the same day Canada recognizes 44 yrs since abolishing the death penalty due to it bring inhuman.

An execution as barbaric as the crime. Doesn't that make us all barbarians?

Dont care

This is inhumane and a violation of the eighth amendment

On death row. Strapped to a gurney on the day slated for execution. “Btw, we are about to hit the switch,” seems a tad moot.

Good. About time. Do the crime - pay the price.

Abolished this barbaric act!

Many more..keep up the great work for justice..

I guess madam SpeakerPelosi will now demand an investigation into Trump over him allowing the execution without consulting the congress

What’s your point...oh yeah NPR really has no point with their articles...kinda like Seinfeld...a show about nothing

Also the public wasn't informed. Why should she and the public be informed so these crazy opponents of the Death Penalty aka no more prison crowd shows up and free the killer.

They should use that chamber multiple times daily.

How many fucking horcruxes does William Barr actually need?

San Quentin has a better yelp rating.

I bet trump watched on livestream

The Supreme Court had to stay up all night to make sure they struck down a lower court decision, just so the federal government could kill someone ASAP. Good thing appointing “pro-life” justices was such a high priority.

We live in a country where of state-sponsored execution of its citizens are justified—black, brown & white ppl indiscriminately. From the carceral to the court systems. This is simply immoral and unjust! EndTheDeathPenalty AbolishPolice

“An eye for an eye makes everyone blind”

This is a dangerous precedent for when Donnie is convicted of treason.

While I'm not a supporter of the death penalty, this man was a white supremacist who tortured and killed an entire family (including an 8-year-old girl) so I don't mourn his passing.

I'm no fan of eye for an eye. And for me state killings are off-putting. Yet I have no problem with finally just brushing aside a pesky lawyer. And I'm a lawyer.

We stood by and let this happen. White supremacist or not, we already criminalize those born into poverty, the boy should've been rehabilitated

Abolish the death penalty

This punishment was merciful. Good riddance.

Bye Daniel! Your bunk will not be cold long!

Here we go again with sniveling and whining about a career criminal who killed a husband and wife and their eight year old daughter. When he put plastic bags over the heads of his victims and suffocated them was he concerned about their pain? Did he notify his victims?

Cruel and unusual

What are disgusting practice perpetrated by supposed pro-life Christians

'Pro life'

So sorry for your loss

Correction: The Justice Department enacted justice.

You think 45 will cheerlead this at 5pm?

This is misleading. He was a white supremacist and a murderer. And that is not how the legal situation evolved. You should be ashamed of yourself NPR.

An inhumane and archaic punishment that has no use in society.

We’re not above barbarism

Communist dictator (murdered millions) Mao Zedong's dictum & the slogan of Chinese Communist Party - 'women hold half of the sky'. Sleepy Joe Biden's rhetoric in a fundraiser - 'Women hold half of the sky'.

Trump probably thinks this is a victory.

White dude - nobody cares - open season!

Honestly this sucks. He was a great actor, but I feel conflicted. How could a guy who was so good in My Left Foot and Phantom Thread commit such a heinous crime?

Imagine that. The 1st time the term white supremacist is left out of a 'news' story about a white supremacist it's a trump admin lethal injection of a white supremacist. Go figure. CORRUPTION FakeNewsMedia pbs corruptnewsmedua cnn abcnews pbs nbc ap

Pro life?

The death penalty should end.

A nightmare. We must eliminate capital punishment.

Great setup to follow the rule of law! 'Whoever, owing allegiance to the United States, levies war against them or adheres to their enemies, giving them aid and comfort within the United States or elsewhere, is guilty of treason and shall suffer death...'

“Lee had been convicted of killing three people, including a child, as part of a broader racketeering scheme to fund a white supremacist cause.” 🤔

I don’t understand this chaos or rush to put someone to death when they are imprisoned. I can’t imagine the emotions this man must have felt in his last 24 hours. I’m going to die! Oh no I’m not! Wow that was close! What? Now I am going to die right now! Shit here I go.

This administration is deliberately killing people during a pandemic. What a cruel, senseless country.

Now do the Globalist “”Elite””....

President Pro Life.

Of all the things to prioritize right now, restarting the federal death penalty shouldn't even be on the list.

Good, riddance.

Next up: Tsarnaev

Good, if anyone deserved to die, it was that piece of trash. The only tragedy, other than the family he massacred, it that he got to live so long after. Anyone who says he should have lived, doesn’t have kids.

Trump isn't killing Americans fast enough with the pandemic.

Finally justice for the victim’s family. That young girl he murdered would be 28 today & in the prime of her life. Weird to see so many defenders of murder & white supremacy in the NPR comments 🤷‍♂️

The courts should not be voting on whether or not the United States allows executions to take place in our country ...the people should.

OBE1XRP In other news Iran is about to execute protesters...smh...where's the outrage.

Why not just give him Covid and test the vaccine on him? I'm sure he would have signed off on it, with a life in prison should it help and work... Just my logical mind, not thinking of revenge. I do believe the victim's family were against his execution.

Good. Back to the rule of law. Hope this ramps up

SayTheirNames William Frederick Mueller, his wife Nancy Ann Mueller and his 8-year-old stepdaughter, Sarah Elizabeth Powell

PUTTING SOMEONE TO DEATH SHOULD NEVER BE PART OF A POLITICAL AGENDA, NO MATTER IF YOU BELIEVE IN CAPITAL PUNISHMENT OR NOT. BARR ORDERED THIS, SO LET THAT SINK IN.

I have mixed emotions I don't support the death penalty however, this prisoner that was the first to be executed in 17 years was a white supremacist who killed a man his wife and an 8 year old daughter in a crime spree

Weird. No mention of the victims he tortured & murdered. William Frederick Mueller, his wife Nancy Ann Mueller and his EIGHT YEAR OLD stepdaughter, Sarah Elizabeth Powell. NPR SAD

This execution makes no sense. I don’t advocate for forgiveness, but to kill someone after a 17 year lockup is beyond the pale.

Weak ass United States, but not all the youngins that shoot the schools up?

1 vote executioner Scotus John Roberts

Governments should NEVER kill their own citizens.

This administration just going all out to get their death toll as high as humanly possible. It's disgusting, but you kinda have to respect the hustle.

So much for pro-life

Why the hurry? “Conservatives” are blood-thirsty maniacs.

So the GOP thought “COVID19 isn’t killing enough people...we need to start doing it ourselves...”?

sarahmccammon sad day. realDonaldTrump you really have your finger on the pulse of fixing criminal justice, don't you?

And now we all can expect the first Trump campaign ad to run, embellishing his felonious self as the 'law and order president.'

Barbaric

Don’t do the crime if you can’t do the time, don’t do it!
