A 47-year-old man has appeared in court charged in connection with the defacement of the Luke Kelly statue in the Sheriff Street area of Dublin on Sunday.

Michael Dunne, with an address at Sophia House, Sean MacDermott Street, has been charged with criminal damage of the sculpture.He said Mr Dunne was arrested yesterday afternoon and held at Store Street Garda Station. The court was told Mr Dunne made no reply when cautioned and he was later charged with criminal damage.He was told to stay away from the Sheriff Street area and sign-on three times weekly at Store Street Garda Station.

He was also told to stay away from the two statues of Luke Kelly - one on Sheriff Street and the other one located near St Stephen's Green Shopping Centre.The court was told the statue on Sheriff Street had been damaged with blue spray paint at around 4.45pm on Sunday and the alleged incident had been captured on CCTV.
