China and the UK have clashed in recent months over a draconian new security law in Hong Kong and the Chinese tech company Huawei. The Guardian’s Tania Branigan examines whether a much promoted ‘golden era’ between the two countries is now at an end

In 2015 George Osborne, the then chancellor, promised a ‘golden decade’ for Chinese-British relations as he drummed up support for new trade opportunities and inward investment. That has all changed after China imposed a harsh new security law in Hong Kong and now the UK government is preparing to backtrack on an agreement to use the Chinese firm Huawei in its 5G infrastructure.that this new phase in relations is going to be difficult for the UK.

China totalitarian regime is the main reason almost every single country in the world is grappling with Corona, and they are paying the price with their citizen's lives, instead of taking responsibility, they choose the way of propaganda, denial, lies and threatening countries.

Ahhh soooo

China and the United States have had a 'golden age', and the United Kingdom has never been. Britain is a loyal dog of the United States. When the relationship between China and the United States deteriorates, it is naturally also when the United Kingdom stays away from China.

The government at that time was really greedy, I hated how they brown-nosed up to China

Cats dogs and champagne. the disgusting culture of disgusting regime which it must stay far from Europe.

Our closet ally warned us against partnering with China. We ignored America's advice at our peril.

has it ever begun?

Was this the golden era when our manufacturing jobs were moved to China? When we replaced good quality products with cheap crap? When we turned a blind eye to countless atrocities? When we gave the CCP the cash and world stage it needed to then threaten freedom and democracy?

I hope so. Their government is even creepier than ours.

Doubt it. Corporate greed and uk ethos to buy highest possible value at rock bottom prices from Chinese will continue...

I think China's relations with most of the world are going to be increasingly bad.

UK supports Turkey in whatever madness and says Turkey is sovereign so we can't interfere, yet we can interfere in China's business.

A century of humiliation that I have never forgotten.

How are trade negotiations going with Beijing?

IAM THE EMPEROR OF BRITISH EAST INDIA COMPANY IAM THE PRESIDENT OF U.S.A NOT U.S PRESIDENT'S DKShivakumar MY GRAND SIRE THE GOD OF WAR KRISHNA INCORPORATED AMERICAN FLAG AND BRITISH UNION JACK FLAG VICTORIA AND ELIZABETH NOT BRITISH MY FAMILY TREASURES WORLD BANK IMF MAHABHARAT

Relations with tyranny’s country? This is not a option.

The question should be: Is the UK's ‘golden era’ now over?

let’s hope so

Perhaps that should say is UKs relations with everywhere over!!

No, I don’t want to be a cute little island with beautiful gardens and awesome gay TV shows that Chinese appreciate, I have to show them that I am still the old big drug dealer well poisoned and shit stirrer

Come on british people, make sure it is over if it isn't

Hilarious... at what period do you think the Chinese “forgot” the opium wars?

Wasn't the golden era when you were bleeding it dry and getting all of the locals hooked on opium?

don't buy low quality products of China

Lol. Brits are now taunting from behind US.

Did they have one? Oh, you mean the colonial era? !

oh look.. there's the Former Queen of England... Hunter of Children... When was she executed? sherlocktarot GoodRiddance EViL Karma

Is Hong Kong still a British colony? 😀

Only now?

yes

Has it been 50 years already? What comes next, the 'diamond era'?

Golden era was when British Empire colonised China... no other golden era
