Beijing's top representative office in Hong Kong has warned the pro-democracy opposition's primary elections at the weekend could violate a new national security law, exacerbating concerns over a crackdown on the former British colony's democracy movement.

HONG KONG - Beijing’s top representative office in Hong Kong has warned the pro-democracy opposition’s primary elections at the weekend could violate a new national security law, exacerbating concerns over a crackdown on the former British colony’s democracy movement.

The primary polls are aimed at selecting democracy candidates who stand the best chance of success in September elections for the Legislative Council, Hong Kong’s governing body. Final results are due later on Tuesday. Luo Huining, the head of the Liaison Office, will have oversight over the implementation of the contentious security law that will also allow mainland security agents to be officially based in China’s freest city for the first time.

The law has also seen countries such as Britain and Canada caution citizens over an increased risk of arbitrary detention in Hong Kong and possible extradition to mainland China where they could face trial in courts controlled by the Communist Party.

Because we knew they would never let Hong Kong be free.

They have the gun they are just deciding whether or not to shoot it for the first time.

Stay strong! FreeHongKong

On its face this seems to be a basic violation of political and human rights. Furthermore, it also appears to be a violation of China's own basic constitution. Unfortunately, China has no working court system to uphold its constitution.

Suprise Suprise .... one would never have guessed

This is getting farcical. You have to wonder what China's citizens think of Beijing's crackdown on Hong Kong and their demolishing the Sino-British Joint Declaration. Can they be happy to see this happening?

peacefuly voting = violate national security law *fragile national security handle with care*

😂 everything is against the law according to China Communist Regime

Of course, tirany should prevail.

CCP dying faster than we all thought.

Pathetic 😂😂

Selling unreal thinking like 'independent' will ruin HongKong 's future. 'All to suffer' (NAM CHAO 揽炒)is the thinking popular among suicide attack terrorists。

A vote is a risk to national security? This island is a fraction of the size of mainland China, could never possibly do anything which would endanger China as a whole. Is uniformity really worth the price of losing the economic value of Hong Kong?

Arrest all of them and deport them to UK, Australia, Canada and US where they would be welcomed.

pro-democracy my ass . They are US-backed terrorists .

China is the new Evil Empire.

Of course it dose

This is not going to end well. I see more riots and deaths in the future. This is sad
