Poland's conservative president Andrjez Duda has narrowly won reelection — further calling into question the country's commitment to western-style democracy. The ruling party has worked to weaken the country's independent judiciary and free press.

With nearly all votes counted, Poland's state electoral commission said Duda had received 51.21% versus Trzaskowski's 48.79%, according to The Associated Press. The commission said uncounted ballots were unlikely to significantly change the results. The European Union, which Poland joined in 2004, has been harshly critical of what it regards as violations of democratic norms. Two years ago thedeclared that the situation in Poland"represents a 'clear risk of a serious breach' of EU values, including the rule of law." The vote triggered an inquiry that could ultimately lead to Poland losing its voting rights in the European Council.

DrTurleyTalks what a headline! (You’d think they’d at least get the photos right...) NPR appears to be taking a visible step away from Nationalism, and right into the Globalist pocket. You can just hear their displeasure of how this “western style democracy” freely voted.

He did win, correct?

Um, he won with the exact same total that Obama beat Romney with. I don’t recall NPR calling that win “narrow” or suggesting that a free and fair election is a threat to democracy. Indeed, it IS democracy.

“Winning an election weakens democracy” is a read headline

Sooooo, the polish people learned NOTHING in WWII...got it.

Liberal democracy is dying and there is nothing you can do about it.

Well, NPR, if you don’t like it, it MUST be a good thing! 💪🏼👍🏼

Do you understand that democracy is majority rule- this is what happens. Just because you political side doesn’t win does not mean the end of democracy.

It isn't even him on this photo. You have to decide, who are you writing about. If it's about Rafał Trzaskowski, I will agree and the picture is good, but change the name.

This is trash from a media outlet wholly owned by Democrat and globalist interests.

its not democracy when people we don't like win.

They voted, oh ‘news organization’... how does that not count as democracy? High turnout. Clear winner. I know it doesn’t check all your npr boxes, I guess, but the Poles seem happy at the polls.

NPR is fake, biased media. FYI

He is not conservative.

Democracy dies in elections.

My my hey hey didn't know there were so many George Soros acolytes interested in Poland. Can't wait until Duda makes the right move and dumps all of Soros' webs and stratagem. Trump will help.

Really? 51.21% to 48.79% with a turnout of nearly 70% of Poland's registered voters. Looks like very well-functioning democracy, no? And since the picture you chose is of the losing challenger not the winner, let me at least help with the spelling of the winner's name: ANDRZEJ.

This is so biased. 'It's not a Democracy unless the Liberal candidate wins.'

Isn't a closely contested election an indication of a strong democracy?

If they go Left they can enjoy weekends like this!

Wins democratically voted in by over 50% of the people. NPR- “further calling into question the countries western style democracy” lmao wtf

He probably cheated, like what's going to happen here in November.

Sounds familiar.

😩

Poland understands that the press are the problem in society. Wish America would do the same. Press should be held accountable for misleading the public with prison sentences.

Sad that other countries are trying to take after the USA now.

Western style democracy = CIA organized fake system with fake history, fake science, fake parliaments ,fake news ,fake terrorism organized by secret services, fake human rights (murder on civilians) ,fake equality, all for next global tyrannic feudalism, under socialism

Press? The press doesn’t exist anymore. It’s the liberals activist organization that report now. Journalists used to report the news but now they want to be part of the news.

If you could please answer these two questions. I need your assistance so I can write my article. 1.) In your opinion, what are the top five things about our society that should change? 2.) What about the world scares you the most?

comes to show you. even after WWII, people don't value their freedom.

Putin.

Ominous

The funniest part is that if Poland loses EU support their already shaky economy will crumble and Germany will have to take back what is theirs. Can't wait to see the modern economic annexation of Poland by Germany!

Why did you post a picture of Duda’s opponent, Mayor Rafal Trzaskowski, under a blurb specifically about Andrjez Duda winning? It looks like Trzaskowski is being portrayed as the winner. (Which *would* be preferable, Duda’s a nationalist nightmare.)

Worth watching this shit. What an example we have set

Nationalism rearing it's ugly head again, globally.

It's crazy how you will call this out in other countries but not America for fear of being perceived as a bias media outlet.

NPR states without evidence: 'The government has also used Poland's popular state broadcaster, ostensibly independent, as a mouthpiece for its policies.'

I thought that was MrJoshHopkins

Poland will probably be financially broke well before the end of his term, I think. The EU funds a large part of his Social Services Support bribe to the electorate and they will pull that funding because they find Poland's new policies to be repugnant and incompatible with the EU

Conservative = Fascist

How to editorialize in a headline npr style

The penetration of the Communist Party of China is everywhere.

Man wins open election. Democracy called into question- NPR

That sucks.
