HONG KONG—A Chinese legal scholar known for his outspoken criticism of China’s leader, Xi Jinping, has been released from police detention, days after he was first taken into custody, the professor’s friends said Sunday.

Xu Zhangrun, a law professor at Beijing’s prestigious Tsinghua University, returned home on Sunday morning, according to his friends.
