Sydney scientists hope a common blood pressure medication could be used to treat COVID-19 as researchers turn to cheap and existing drugs to ease patient suffering | rachelclun

Sydney scientists hope a common blood pressure medication could be used to treat COVID-19 as researchers turn to cheap and existing drugs to ease patient suffering.

"With new drugs, you can't get around the fact that they need to go through preclinical testing, clinical testing."Chief Investigator Associate Professor Meg Jardine, from The George Institute for Global Health, said developing new drugs can take years.

"If you can just prevent people from needing intensive care, for instance ... that really makes it much easier for a health service to cope with an outbreak."
