The 'therapy' imposed from 1966 to 1983 was pointless, unethical and highly damaging, an Ontario judge ruled this week in a drawn-out civil lawsuit

Patients, many found not-guilty of crimes by reason of mental illness, were fed LSD and other hallucinogenic drugs until they became delirious; kept naked for days with other inmates in a windowless “capsule;” and enclosed in another locked room where fellow patients meted out painful punishment.

Among those hurt by the treatments at Oak Ridge Mental Health Centre — now called Waypoint — was Danny Joanisse. He had come from a broken home, tried to harm himself and commit suicide, and been sexually abused at the infamous St. John’s Training School for Boys before arriving at Oak Ridge, said Justice Ed Morgan.

The judge concluded the province and two physicians — Drs. Elliott Barker and Gary Maier — were civilly liable for assault and battery and breach of their fiduciary duty to patients. Barring an appeal, the case now moves on to assessing damages. “The plaintiffs, some of whom are my clients, are people who did some very bad things when they were ill, but they were not guinea pigs,” he said. “We think the judgment is important because it underscores that people who were found to be not criminally responsible by reason of insanity did not exist as specimens to build careers on.”

“I met one young man rolling on the floor in delirium and was told he was undergoing regression treatment,” said British psychiatrist John Gunn in a 2006 paper about a visit to Oak Ridge in the 1970s. “This was ‘to correct his adverse childhood by allowing him to be reborn into a caring group’ . I inquired about his diagnosis. I was told he was a ‘psychopath’ I asked the nature of his offence.

Federal court to rule on whether 'shouting' is 'workplace harassment'The employee claims a supervisor repeatedly raised his voice and belittled him Will they be shouting the ruling? Can this be retroactive? Seems like a no-brainer to me. There is no cause for raising your voice in the workplace unless the ambient noise level is also high. If you are that pissed off at someone, fire them, and if you can't, quit.
