Last year, Germany exported €119 billion worth of goods to the U.S. and €96 billion to China. Now it's struggling to pick between the two in their escalating dispute over issues ranging from trade to human rights.

Of all advanced economies outside Asia, Germany has the deepest economic ties in both camps and would have the most to lose from a Cold War between Washington and Beijing.

Germany has a major China AND Russia problem.

please remind Germany , just Who drinks their beer !!!

Now which side would you pick? The one side who changes policies with every new administration... Or the one who's consistent for the Long haul.... Dude, we are absolutely losing our number one status in the world as we speak... And that's okay, just don't deny it

Global realignments are happening. Germany has decided to tie their futures to the China-Soviet sphere, but still expects the U.S. to pay for their security. TRUMP sees this for what it is, BS. Loyalty MUST be a 2-way street.

We helped rebuild your country,China is buying it

'Hard'? So much for the 'lessons of WWII'! They need MORE statues in Germany!

The world economy is an inter-connected and inter-dependent whole.

In all honesty, the US, and rest of America’s are a mess. I’d just let us rot and pretend the earth is flat again!

when a politician chooses $ over HumanRights and democracy, he/she should be punished by the voters! HongKong CCP

Not true! China did not help rebuild Germany nor did they airlift life saving supplies to zerst Berlin. How easy WSJ writers forget. They did not live in Germany.

China's development has benefited from economic globalization.

Countries of continent of the Munich agreement should find such decisions difficult ...

Sure, pick China, they are 'honest & loyal' an ideal ally in times of trouble. 😒

One is a democracy and the other is a fascist dictatorship. I think that given Germany's experiences in the 20th century it won't be a difficult choice.

Hoping EU will cut ties with China. Don’t be a worships of money. I’m sure people in Europe know how shameful it is to seek for economic support for China.

Same when Russia annexed Crimea. Germany needs gas so wouldn't support anything that would upset Russia.

Without America Germany wouldn’t be where they are today. I don’t remember China bailing them out in ww2

美国逼着自己的盟友选边站、让自己的盟友为难,天下苦美久矣

As soon as the US walks away from the post WWII order Germany ist kaput. They have no navy to protect their shit. They are so fucked because 15% of their economy is exports..

Don’t be stupid Germany They are Commies

Why should Deutschland pick a side? Cannot Deutschland have his own side? Only children pick up sides, the adults should have their own sides!

How is it hard?

Germany was “ squirming” about cutting back on their energy deals with Russia. Even as Russia was squeezing Ukraine. So it’s difficult for me to think there’s a long term plan.

Idk Germany is fine in eu, plus it held its own by itself against both for a while last time,, and Russia probably wont bail everyone out this time,, you think we may try and change strategy Probably should

To be clear, China has no plan to force any country to pick side. That’s what America does.

And WSJ supporting China

Germany should think of itself as lucky, wooed by two suitors. Marry no one and date both.

It’s never hard for Germany to pick the side. It has bowed to Chinese money for so long and will continue to do so.

Not just Germany, but Europe is a giant geopolitical sandwhich, stuck between US, China and Russia.

TomFairless bopanc shashamimi gerardtbaker Yup. NATO selling out quickly. Trump has been right from the start.

Why does Germany have to choose one side. Germany can be friend with both China and America. China won't ask other country to choose, but America always do that.

On trade, why does Germany have to pick sides? They should do what is best for Germany as must America.

If it’s that hard a choice between a representative democracy and a communist govt... We are waiting for German moral clarity? Lmfao

Merkel-led EU has obviously made it clear they are picking China over Trump.

I don't think we would invade Germany but, who knows what China has planned!

Joe Biden, Obama, clintons sold out working class Americans to china & Wall Street journal was fine with it but if Germany does it now they will write articles about it. is trash & corporate media along w/ politicians on both sides in Washington DC are horrible human beings

Germany will be screwed if they choose china. One can Trust A Snake but not CcP china. Canada's Trudeau also one good friend of CCP & they throw him under bus when tough time arise. Same with Russia , Pakis etc....Picking Opportunist China as ally is equal to suicide.

Wrong, China is sterling Germany Advanced Intellectual Properties too‼️

China has a 100 year plan that its executing...we are 20-30 years along...too late now folks, their reach into every corner of the world is so entrenched it cannot be unwound....and many Presidents and CIA just watched.....

Germany still is pissed we stepped in and destroyed their dreams of world dominance even after all these decades...😆

In this time of need, there is only one German we can rely on....his name is TheRealTommyKay

Screw Germany. Rather Poland, Austria, and Britain

If this is true, how the global political network has changed. US/German relations were pivotal during the Cold War. The frontline with Sovietism. Presidents making speeches at the Berlin Wall. Where is this going? Where are we headed?

I sure don't remember China helping protect Germany from communism for 50 years.

If Germany cant see through this, they do not deserved to be called an ally.

Thanks trump.

What are the odds to always stand on the wrong side of history?

shock

Our support for years goes away,,,welcome communists,,,again

The potential for future development is also an important dimension in picking side. It’s needed to assess the future rank of China and America.

As always in Germany' failed history since Bismarck gone. Indeed UnitedStates tricked SovietUnion to save capitalism in WW2 - only to lose everything 1991 including Its' old capital Kyiv. Germany has been a cultural superpower but Not an evil toxic nation based state entity

Simple: Who would Germany prefer to rely on for maintaining German sovereignty and independence after allowing the installation of military bases and stationing tens of thousands of armed troops to serve in them? USA or China?

silkroad

Obviously Germany is behind the current competition in AI, telecommunication, new material, even electric mobile, because it follows China steps.

Germany can choose the side that is the most beneficial for its economy as wish. No need to be dominated by US forever.

.come now HeikoMaas

Yup. China has strategically created this dependence with bad intentions all along. This has been part of their long game which is now here.

Be with the livings on the ground,no more the bloody throne up the hill.

Germany is making another terrible mistake in history If it chooses China the US has literally helped Germany to be better and thrive smh.

Who is pushing Berlin to pick sides? Why can't Berlin just choose for their own benefits🙂

We are talking of trade not choosing a partner !!!

Under Trump the USA has become an unreliable partner in all areas. There are no longer any agreements - as is usual among allies. Trump has broken so much porcelain internationally in 3.5 years.

May be Germany has no knowledge of the atrocities CCPChina has inflicted on the Tibetans, Uyghurs, HongKongers, Catholics and Christians, FaLunGong and the live harvest of human organs? It seems a pretty easy choice.

They already sided with Russia

After November all will be well between Germany and US once more after the departure of incompetent Donnie

We should choose values over money. Freedom and democracy should not be trade.

I’m not deep,is it good or bad?

贪婪的德国人。

America has become a completely thug. It always bullies other countries, now it’s its allies’ turn. Canada and Australia can kneel down.

why cant germany see what others are seeing

I'm getting repetitive, but America is on the verge of becoming a third world country. The richest third world country... but not for 95% of the citizens... and we already have a fourth rate dictator.

it's hard only when you have no moral standards.

artunckocabalkn Hocam bu habere ne dersiniz dolar daha da değer kaybeder mi?

In any case China will win.

Don't pick. Just go to China then as Germany doesn't care about democracy.

Germany, of all the countries, should know better. The CCP, concentration camps, organs harvesting, and genocide.

It should be an easy decision - USA is a democracy, whereas China is a ...

veronicalderon I bet it’s getting easier.

Torn between two lovers

The more Mr Trump puts taxes on German exports and China offers new business opportunities, the more this choice will be easy to resolve...

Break alliance with Germany

ok

Александр Пушкин — Руслан и Людмила (Поэма):Отрывок стиха!!! К ногам красавицы надменной Принес я меч окровавленный, Кораллы, злато и жемчуг; ***Александр Пушкин***

Hence why they’re Covid-19 infection rates keep going up and up

A China se tornou tão importante para a economia alemã quanto os EUA, tornando difícil para Berlim escolher lados na rivalidade das superpotências. Ora, AngelaMerkeICDU que caia in love com os Jinping da vida - ela tem alma comunista.

Hummm seems weird this would be a hard decision but ok

Germany,Which one would you choose

Plan B: Continue exports to US as before & add India to your list in place of Corona China.

Repo auto carrier

Better pick the U.S. a chance to grow between us as the world finally sees what China is doing.....Covid-19 what next?

Go China!

Too bad the Germans are having these types of conundrums. Hope they figure it out, wouldn’t want a stain on their country’s history

America always blamed others about human rights, look at his own human rights

hmm. American Empire that is soon to be bankrupt like USSR before, versus emerging global economic leader with 3X the population. Hard choice.

How did we get here? Trump!!!!

China possibly is the best market for our cars in the next decade so.. welp, it was nice to be with you.. see you at Nato.

1/2 Keep in mind that Germany does absolutely nothing for the US. It's a one-way street. So why is this choice so difficult?

trade and human rights usa and china same shit shoot again!
