Op-Ed: Andrew Yang: Make tech companies pay you for your data (via latimesopinion)

Whenever you sign up for a new social media service or website, or download an app onto your phone or computer, you’ll typically see some long disclaimer language written in legalese. You scroll through it quickly and click the “I agree” button.

Facebook is now worth $650 billion, with annual revenue of $70 billion. Google is worth nearly $1 trillion, with annual revenue of $160 billion. The business of these companies is primarily based on advertising directed at us, built on the backs of our data. They are also influencing our actions and attitudes by feeding us information that maximizes our engagement on those platforms.

The CCPA also allows consumers to select an “authorized agent” to exercise these rights on their behalf. This is big. The “authorized agent” provision opens the door for an organization or group to advocate for its members’ data rights and to collectively bargain with tech companies on the value of its members’ data. The average citizen is completely outgunned and in the dark about how to take control of personal data.

opinion People are so conditioned now to “free” web content and services. They pay obviously by viewing ads and having their data sold. Will they pay to use Facebook and Instagram in return for their data being sacrosanct. Or choose to keep the free version. I suspect the latter.

AndrewYang opinion We should get paid its our data.

AndrewYang opinion why doesnt every country have this

scottsantens opinion Big data is the new big oil only much worse . Oil companies don’t steal your oil and sell it .

AndrewYang opinion Just move to crypto based platforms so we can end this stupid debate.

AndrewYang opinion What's to stop the tech company from increasing their prices for advertisements? If anyone had experience with Pay Per Clicks, one will wonder how the keywords prices go up so quickly. They just need to manipulate it on their end on a day-to-day basis.

AndrewYang opinion oceanprotocol

AndrewYang opinion Interesting idea, however I see a few problems... 1. What is the value of a person's monthly Facebook data? Maybe $10? 2. Companies collect and sell data in order to provide 'free' services. If this was prohibited, they would have to either charge a user fee, or increase ads.

AndrewYang opinion Yep, make tech companies pay for Americans' personal data instead of just letting them make money off it for nothing. I've been saying this for years.

AndrewYang opinion I think getting paid for your data is really not the correct solution to the privacy. Personal data should be seen from a Human Rights perspective and not a commerce perspective.

AndrewYang opinion Yang2024 🇺🇲

opinion Yang is a joke. He backed Biden over Sanders. Does he really think that Biden would ever back what he proposes? AndrewYang YangGang fools.
