Anthony Albanese and Bill Shorten have reiterated Labor’s demands for a royal commission into the robodebt scheme saying the government “broke the system”. The scheme matched tax and income reported to Centrelink to automatically generate debts from people including many who were found to owe no money at all. Almost 500,000 debts totalling more than $720 million will be refunded to Australians after the Federal Court declared the scheme unlawful.

“This is a royal commission that the Morrison government is bringing on itself.” Labor leader Anthony Albanese said an inquiry would uncover when the government knew the scheme had been declared unlawful and argued it was needed to prevent another disaster from happening. "It was wrong. It was illegal. It can never be allowed to happen again," Mr Albanese said on Twitter on Tuesday morning.
