A group, Justice for All, Edo State, has asked the presiding judge of the Federal High Court , Benin, Justice Mohammed Umar, to recuse himself from the suit on the mode of June 22 governorship primary election of the All Progressives Congress in the state, over bias.
“Justice Umar appeared in the courtroom visibly combative and vindictive, querying why the legal counsel of the APC and its leading aspirant, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, went to the appellate court to set aside his undemocratic restraining order. It said: “For the entire duration of Friday’s hearing, Justice Umar offered a long rope to the plaintiffs, who are all allies of the Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State, now of the Peoples Democratic Party , and are seeking to destabilise the APC, as well as to halt the party’s governorship primary election on June 22, while displaying unrestrained aggression towards the defendants.
“We do not wish to be a party to a trial that mocks the integrity of the judiciary or be at the receiving end of acerbic comments from a judge, who is not covert in his bias, but openly boasts of his willingness to pronounce another problematic ruling.” The defendants in the suit are APC; its suspended National Chairman, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, a former governor of Edo state; the Independent National Electoral Commission ; and the Inspector-General of Police .
The allies of Obaseki maintained that the Constitution of APC provided that the states should suggest the mode of primary election to the NWC, stressing that the leadership of the party in Edo had suggested indirect mode, in which 4,000 delegates would participate at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin.
