Colorado Governor Jared Polis signs bill allowing police to be sued, limiting use of force in wake of George Floyd protests.

DENVER — Colorado Gov. Jared Polis on Friday signed into law a broad police accountability bill introduced amid protests over the death of George Floyd.

Colorado is one of several states and cities considering proposals meant to limit excessive force and increase accountability after Floyd, a black man, died May 25 when a white Minneapolis police officer pressed his knee on his neck for nearly eight minutes. The Colorado measure gets rid of the qualified immunity defense that protects police officers from lawsuits and allows them to be sued for misconduct. It bans chokeholds and limits other uses of force by policeThe new law also requires all local and Colorado State Patrol officers who have contact with the public to be equipped with body cameras by July 1, 2023.

Y’all really upset cops will be held accountable? We don’t want to get rid of them. We want them to stop getting rid of US. Do your job properly & don’t kill a man just cuz he giving you a hard time. If your first reaction is to pull a trigger or choke someone, get off the force.

I plea with everyone to bring to his attention to the horrendous murder of Elijah McClain.. murdered by AuroraPD .. AuroraMayorMike ProgressNowCO

almostjingo It does not eliminate qualified immunity for the governor, elected politicians, mayors, city councils, school boards, judges, prosecuting attorneys, and other officials of states, cities, and local government. Just the police. You can sue the police individually, no one else.

Hopefully other states will follow suit and eliminate Qualified immunity, forcing officers to take accountability for murdering citizens

GavinNewsom

Ask how many small businesses he destroyed in Colorado?

So basically Colorado is now a open state. Got it

almostjingo Bring on free-for-all for criminals

KarmaDogOh So all of the Colorado Police are going on strike or what? Don't put up with this crap.

almostjingo GovofCO only if government officials like you and City, State have rescinded your immunity! No one is above the law.

almostjingo Wow. Officers will second guess themselves and Colorado is now less safe.

almostjingo Oh! Bye Colorado PD!

almostjingo RIOTS. SAY RIOTS.

This bill effectively ending qualified immunity is a big win. Colorado is always a pioneer in ending idiotic laws. This and weed, for example.

deray “Allowing police to be sued” “Allowing” 🙃

Are you saying that before this bill policemen couldn't be sued for misconduct? Is this ridicolous thing true in all the US? Now I understand why you american have such a big police brutality problem. You cannot sue them?! Really?! OMG!!!

I love how states aren’t waiting on the federal government. 45 is a joke; let’s get this party started.❤️🇺🇸

Good

Way to go, Colorado for taking a stand!

When are they going to change the law making politicians liable for the lies they tell on Capitol Hill. Why are they immune? They should be held to a higher standard. Nobody is above the law.

Colorado is always leading and is always in the Forefront good job governor

Good

If so then police officers should be able to sue criminals and their families.

Fuck the police but not the Polis.

I swear people must be getting dumber. But, they are getting bad information from the media. Still, you'd think people would understand why the neutral third parties we send in to enforce the law would need some legal protection.

Crime rate will increase.

Don't think that I don't think about Colorado... It's about the only thing I ever do...

Just wanted to point out that the politicians voting to remove qualified immunity protections from law enforcement have qualified immunity protections themselves. Funny that they are not changing the law to allow themselves to be sued. BacktheBlue GLFOP NationalSheriff

LMAO

Finally!

selfdeclaredref So, Colorado basically outlawed police and is now treating them as vigilantes.

Greg Floyd, no twin says the wrong name right after their brothers death, this was Illuminati trying to start a race war to take over the country

Jared's got that finger in the wind. All he needs now is 100,000 village idiots willing to work for nothing and accept personal responsibility for all of society's ills, from drug addiction and alcoholism to mental illness and fatherless families. Let's call them idiot police.

This just in : Trump wins Colorado

I foresee a severe shortage of police very soon

ONLY BLACK FELONS MATTER

Individual accountability still absent from society. Go figure.

Stop the bs no ones saying NO law enforcement just a new model fit for 2020 what’s the issue with that ?

Well, Lucky Colorado will be the first state without a police force. Good for them. The citizens can tell us all about how great that works out for them. Citizens will have to do their own policing. Sounds fun.

That's a start.

The Devil will wage War against the Saints Book of Revelation 13:7 Tulsa TrumpRally PoliceBrutality

and in non narrative news:

This is huge and needs to be done in EVERY state!!

Every police officer needs to resign today or you will spend the rest of your life in court getting sued

I hope it’s not the taxpayers that pay for the lawsuits.

“The new law also requires all local and Colorado State Patrol officers who have contact with the public to be equipped with body cameras by July 1, 2023.” No rush there Jared. If they wanted that could be done by Sept 1, 2020

It’s a move in the right direction cops have been protected for to long no other arm of gov have such low standards

So they should be held accountable gor their actions, maybe now they will do police work instead of hunting what they consider to be their prey.

Citizens need to obey the Law too. Show respect for the Police, stop mocking and baiting them.

Good luck hiring police. hahahahahaha. RunFromColorado

Sued? Colorado May never have another police shooting again.

Congress should pass a law conditioning federal funds for important state projects on states abolishing qualified immunity.

Yeah...that will help. 🤦🏼‍♂️
