When a pregnant woman goes into labour, the cliche is of a mad dash to the hospital, urgent phone calls to loved ones and a scramble to collect packed bags and phone chargers.Home birthing is being made available to more women in Canberra after a successful trial
Mother-of-two Muriel Mace delivered her second son, Raphael Mace-Erwood, in her own bedroom seven weeks ago as part of a publicly-funded home birth trial in the ACT.She said her baby benefited too because the lack of stress in the environment meant "he was just chilled".Ms Mace said her midwives were experts in providing a safe delivery at home.
But home birthing is being made available to all eligible women in Canberra after an evaluation of the trial gave it a 90 per cent success rate. "They basically just stuck a monitor on me and said 'don't move'. But I'm a moving person and I like to do my own stuff," Ms Mace said. For Ms Mace, those professionals were Ann Clark and Lee Reilly-Eagling, who spent a lot of time getting to know the home and family during the antenatal period."It's a wonderful option for women," Ms Reilly-Eagling said.
