by Congress in 1996 that says online platforms are not legally responsible for what users post. The Justice Department said its proposal would"update the outdated immunity for online platforms" under Section 230.
"Taken together, these reforms will ensure that Section 230 immunity incentivizes online platforms to be responsible actors," Barr said.: giving online platforms incentives to address illicit content, clarifying federal powers to address unlawful content, and"promoting open discourse and greater transparency."
The recommendations come amid ongoing scrutiny of the power of big tech firms like Google, Facebook and Amazon by Congress and federal and state agencies. Legal observers described Trump's executive order as"political theater" and said it did not change existing federal law and would have no bearing on federal courts. Twitter has said attempts to erode the decades-old legal immunity may"threaten the future of online speech and Internet freedoms."
Wait... I thought the DoJ was responsible for enforcing laws, not writing them. 🤔
Would love to see SCOTUS throw this out and they WILL. The precedence here is too much
You would think people in the DOJ would have read the Constitution and read SCOTUS First Amendment decisions
The 1st Amendment was created for the very reason this evil bastard is attempting to pull this off. It protects citizens from government reprisals for speech criticizing the government. which is FORBIDDEN to punish, censor or make any attempts to muzzle its citizenry.
Not going to happen. From hell’s heart Barr stabs at Twitter; for hate’s sake Barr spits his last breath at Twitter. While still chasing Twitter, though tied to it he is, “thou damned social media!” Thus, Barr doth throw his rubber tipped spear! cc: SenateDems HouseDemocrats
😐 Legal protections are important to ensure freedom of speech for all individuals.
Trump extortion
Well, hey, as long as we are undoing everything - why not just burn it all down? All of it. Down. To the ground.
If you are injured by content distributed on Facebook, being false information about vaccines, COVID-19, gun safety, climate change; or hate speech, cyber bullying, etc. you should be able to sue them to oblivion.
I just don’t understand the problem. If Facebook or whoever is manipulating algorithms to ‘suppress’ your speech, take your speech to a competitor that doesn’t. It is literally the free market concept. Maybe just no one wants to hear you?
'…cannot delegate our obligations to protect the safety of the American people…' – AG Barr 🤔 Private prisons FDA & EPA deregulation Bungled COVID—19 response Academi Repeal of Bright-Line rules Firing of IGs Except, apparently, when it's politically expedient?

I thought Republicans were the party of small government?
Nah. The DOJ shouldn’t be involved in this at all in the first place.
Perhaps Twitter should just ban Trump.
Isn't this really about free speech ?
Zuckerberg will gladly give up anyone’s name and phone number and address to Trump so that he can prosecute them for saying bad things about him. For some reason Zuck and Trump are bedfellows now. And it reeks of Russia
Justice Department? America has one of those?
So Trump can silence dissent. VoteBlueToEndThisNightmare
The issue isn't legal protections, its regulation. Stripping away legal protections would only enable the promotion of non-factual platforms, but regulating social media platforms to fact check and verify users would improve the quality and veracity of virtual encounters.
The Justice Department is illegitimate under Attn. General Barr.
Remember...
They did this to themselves.
but not for police? Seem like the right priorities over there -_-
Excellent
Yes.. But Facebook Billionaire Boy likes Trumpy..
