West Australians will no longer be sent to prison for unpaid fines, with law reforms prompted by the 'inhumane' death of an Aboriginal woman six years ago passing State Parliament.

Ms Kilroy welcomed news the legislation had finally passed, but said it was long overdue.

Last year WA Premier Mark McGowan unveiled 12 measurable targets, including reducing the number of Aboriginal adults in prison by 23 per cent by 2028-29. Attorney-General John Quigley said the State Government remained committed to reducing Indigenous incarceration."We're imprisoning Indigenous people in Western Australia at 70 per cent higher than the national average and 30 per cent higher than the Norther Territory," he said.Mr Quigley said the Government was "flattening the curve" of Indigenous incarceration and the number of juvenile detainees had fallen, but there was a lot of work to do.

"There are a number of justice system reforms that are in the early implementation stages or being developed."Greens MP Alison Xamon said the law reform should have been introduced after the 1991 Royal Commission into Aboriginal deaths in custody."From 2006 to 2019, there were 10,534 prison receptions for fine default only," she said.

Keep fueling that racism fire fake news ABC

So pleased to hear this from WA

Is this is everyone or privileged few

Stats are correct.. more whites people die in prison. Do your research.

In a previous job I had a client who had over $220,000 in fines. All related to motor vehicle. BUT! Because he was Aboriginal (note I used a capital A) he was allowed to continue driving without the need to pay any of the fines..? Would a white person get away with that?

you do the crime you do the time.

Yeah just let them off with NO PUNISHMENT for any crime that the way but you can bet the whiteman won't get off.All goes back to intelligence and there is some really dumb black fellas around affected from FAS D and their alcoholic mothers.

Pay your fines!!!

I agree that jail for unpaid fines seems extreme but what is the alternative? We operate in a system that relies on rule of law. The idea being that people will play ball. What happens when people no there is no consequence? I don’t have the answer... just putting it out there

MdmAbsentMinded THERE ARE REAL CAUSES TO FIGHT FOR WesternAustralia notaboutcolor ITS ABOUT poverty LACKOFEDUCATION BADLAWS WHERE IS THE COMPASSION? Are we no longer human ?

She was bashed by her boyfriend but didn't seek medical treatment because she didn't want to be responsible for her boyfriend getting arrested even when she was in jail and sick from the infection caused by the bashing she would not tell the staff she had been bashed

Please remember that this won’t bring her back Celebrate the change but NEVER forget the First Nations people who had to die to make it happen

That's good - as long as they do the community service instead. But stop blaming police for her death. Police didn't give her septicaemia. Septicaemia (sepsis) kills around 5,000 Australians each year. You said it yourself. Stop the race baiting.

Not good enough, The Prime minister , Preimer’s of each state and both Houses of Parliament including the Governor General need to acknowledge that racism and injustice exist in Australia and police reform and training will be put in place.

The ABC still adding fuel to the fire

RichardOnlineC1 Well done MarkMcGowanMP. We need fair and strong leaders since the LNP governments are bereft of that.

At last.

'She was taken to hospital three times during her incarceration, and on the third visit died from septicaemia and pneumonia.' Sounds more like the fault of the hospital than anything to do with police or custody.

Fantastic!

and when we say, 'Fuck this racist country,' it is informed by personal experience, reading history, political theory & deep thought. No recklessness here. AnotherDayInTheColony blacklivesmatteraustralia BlackLivesMatter

«The law, in its majestic equality, forbids the rich as well as the poor to sleep under bridges, to beg in the streets, and to steal bread.» Gaol for unpaid fines is an attack on the poor.

You should go to jail for unpaid fines though.

Another propaganda article. Pinning white against indigenous. Are you proud ? The point is the system has to change. No propaganda or BS is going to help that. Start spreading education about how people can help. Stop instigating rage and discourse.

and how many non indigenous died in police custody
