Early results of a clinical trial for a COVID-19 treatment in the United Kingdom have shown to be successful.

More than 2,000 patients in UK hospitals were given a daily dose of dexamethasone – a widely accessible steroid designed to treat arthritis and allergies – which reduced the risk of death by one-third.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson said he was “proud” that UK scientists had found the first successful treatment of the coronavirus in the world. Authorities estimated the drug would have saved about 5,000 lives if implemented from the outset of the crisis. Image: AP
