Medical and health experts have urged the government to take the necessary steps to ensure access is restricted to some drugs that are illegally procured and used by rapists.
“People who engage in rape use them because they leave individuals unable to defend themselves. Most times, the person who is attacked might become confused, have trouble defending themselves or not able to remember what happened later,” he said. “The keyword in this definition is valid consent. A person under the influence of date rape drugs or alcohol cannot give valid consent just as a minor or mentally incapacitated person cannot do the same.
In reaction to the choice of activated charcoal being thrown around on social media as an antidote to neutralize date rape drugs, Amibor noted that charcoal may have the ability to absorb a wide variety of substances. “I would not advise anybody to engage in self-medication with activated charcoal. Affected cases should be taken to hospital or care setting for appropriate treatment,” he said.
“There should not be any judgmental and blame-game approach. Prevention of infection and prevention of pregnancy should be included in the victim’s management. Emergency contraception will also be given for possible prevention of pregnancy,” he said. “Clinical psychologist has a part to play in the management, counselling and re-counselling to ensure the victim does not suffer post-traumatic stress disorder resulting from the incident,” he said.
