Govt should release the 269 Rohingya refugees arrested and detained, including 49 children — Joint Action Group for Gender Equality and Coalition for Child Rights MalaysiaJUNE 13 — The Joint Action Group for Gender Equality and the Coalition for Child Rights Malaysia are appalled at the arrest and detention of 269 Rohingya asylum seekers, including 49 children, who arrived in Malaysia on Monday by boat.

In January 2020, the UN International Court of Justice issued a preliminary decision in a case brought by Gambia against Myanmar under the 1948 UN Genocide Convention for its treatment of Rohingyas. In this preliminary decision, the ICJ found that the Rohingya were a “protected group within the meaning of the Genocide Convention” and that “there is a real and imminent risk of irreparable prejudice to the rights [of the Rohingya].

Arresting and detaining the Rohingya refugees upon their arrival and restricting their access to any asylum procedure, interpreters, or UNHCR or NGO support violates the principle of non-refoulement and the minimum standards required to uphold this principle. The arrest and detention of 49 Rohingya children who arrived in Malaysia on Monday is both especially inhumane and appalling, and a direct violation of our international obligations.

In its 2018 Concluding Observations to Malaysia, the Cedaw Committee recommended to the Malaysian government to fully respect the principle of non-refoulement; to adopt national asylum and refugee procedures in conformity with international standards; and to establish alternatives to detention for refugee and asylum-seeking women and girls, while in the meantime taking measures to ensure their protection against gender-based violence.

This is totally wrong to release them. They will further invite their friends to come over. Heavy penalties for them to save future Msia.

Release to the streets , jungle or your own house? Please be more specific. And then what? Invite and encourage more rohingya to come by boat? You know our gov is broke right, are you ready to feed them? Talk is cheap

Release, send to where? Your house is it?

So is this joiny action group is going to support and take care of them, giving them food, medical, and other need without using our tax payer money? And also send them our of malaysia to any country asap

Hantar balik..

Feel sad for the children. They need protection n proper hygiene n decent nutrition. Hope the kids get some proper care. They shouldn't be treated badly
