Los Angeles Rep. Karen Bass has worked on police abuse issues for 47 years. Now she's in charge of House effort to enact it into law.

that she’ll have to shepherd through the House and potentially through negotiations with congressional Republicans and the White House if it is to be signed into law.

The Democrats’ bill would make it easier for people to sue a police department if their civil rights are violated and for police to be prosecuted for criminal behavior. It would set up a national network to track police misconduct to prevent officers from getting rehired in a different jurisdiction, make lynching a federal hate crime and ban chokeholds and neckholds among federal officers.

“Of course, we felt terrible that he had been beat up. But we were happy that finally, finally, the world would see what happened,” she said. “We thought it [would be] over — all the things that we had worked for 20 years before. We never had evidence. Now we had evidence.” Bass will also face resistance from progressive groups, as well as fellow Democrats such as Rep. Ilhan Omar , because of her refusal to embrace calls to “defund the police.”

Bass’ prominent role comes as Washington Democrats have quietly begun speculating about who may become speaker when Pelosi -- who considered retiring in 2016 -- steps down. Bass is frequently named in that mix.“She has the temperament. She has the knowledge of the caucus. She has the understanding of the rules. And I really can’t point to a member who says they either don’t like her or can’t stand her,” said Rep. Bennie Thompson .

KarenBassTweets How many years or rather decades have Democrats keep talking about this! Far too many, so move over your in the way!' BTW U lied when U said U didn't know anyone in Congress that wants to defund police! I'm sure U know Omar, AOC & Talib!

KarenBassTweets We also need justice in our courts, too many biased judges and Congress is no better, watch those committee things on TV and you can tell exactly what party people belong to! They are far from equal or fair! Time to hold Congress accountable for their actions!! It is most unequal

KarenBassTweets Karen Bass I have to say I am a Trump supporter. I have to say you are an amazing lady! I so sgree with the reform ideas you seek and hope you keep speaking out to be a leader in this , this is a very important cause for all of us!

KarenBassTweets You are so biased to this country and so out of touch. This count is angry with the weak and do nothing Democratic Party! You are making a greater divide and my family has been Democrats since 1940. Republican all the way!!!!

KarenBassTweets KarenBassTweets I LOVE YOU!!! JUSTICE AND POLICING FOR ALL! Amen! GodBless!

KarenBassTweets Which makes you a Racist

KarenBassTweets If you are so concerned, what about black on black killings every week, it doesn't fit your narrative. The factual Chart Shows more Whites are killed by police yearly than blacks.if Whites didn't let the courts and law work there would be riots weekly. Remember All lives matter

KarenBassTweets If she has had 5 decades to reform and she believes it is in such deplorable shape still - then she should probably resign and let someone else try!

KarenBassTweets And what is the swamps record on black community before Trump? Asking for a friend.

It's not police reform Congress lady, it's Slave 🚓.... Reform... Get the folks off my ass

it's fizzled already in the White House . W H does support giving police immunity from prosecution.

Who fkn cares. Cops are good and bad only cause democrats got their buddies in and the democrats tied hands of good cops. And thaaaatsabouttoChange Nothing can stop whats coming

DH_TruthSeeker CNN MSNBC JoeBiden CNN / MSNBC watchers won't see any of this. We need to share. Trump holds roundtable on race relations with prominent black leaders.

No black person should be charged with a crime if its committed on another black person. Wouldnt that cut down on police brutality

*let police reforms fizzle

So many Democrats have been in office for so long, but nothing can be done about these terrible laws that they enact and enforce. If only they would take action like they have promised again and again right? It will surely be different this time. Vote them all out and start over.

Fart. Noise.

riiiight

❣️

47 years but NOW is the time to finally do something.

It did not fizzle, Rep Karen Bass was focusing on other things outside her community, “open borders” “ sanctuary cites” etc

FEDERALLY BAN CHOKE HOLDS BY THE POLICE

As an Asian-American, I’ve learned and trying to adjust my life accordingly to the issue of racism in the past 45 years. Changing people’s mentality about the other races require a miracle and only God could perform. Let us pray !

I live in her district. I’d rather see her become a senator replacing Feinstein, who must go, than House Speaker simply because I think she’d make a great senator and would like to see her house seat turn even more progressive. (She doesn’t support defunding police)
