Court halts Reps investigative committee

The Investigative Committee set up by the House of Representatives to investigate allegations of collecting inducement to pass the Control of Infectious Disease Bill failed to sit on Thursday following a court order halting the investigation.

Spokesperson of the Coalition of United Political Parties, Ikenga Ugochinyere, who alleged the House collected $10 million as inducement to pass the bill, approached the Court seeking to stop the House from going ahead to investigate the allegation. Justice Taiwo Taiwo of the Federal High Court asked the Speaker and leadership of the House to cause an appearance within seven days to show course why the prayers of the plaintiff should not be granted. However the adhoc committee set up by the House failed to resume sitting following the service of the injunction on the committee.

Journalists, some members of the CUPP as well as counsel to its spokesperson who were present at the venue of the resumed sitting, left disappointed as none of the committee members showed up. The House at Plenary had resolved to investigate the allegation and find out whether the leadership or any member compromised their position and collected any form of inducement to carry out their legislative function.
