Mountain cattlemen in last-ditch muster to save brumbies from being shot

A group of mountain cattlemen and women have taken to Victoria's High Country in a last-ditch bid to save their cherished brumbies.On-ground shooting of the brumbies was due to start today after a Federal Court ruling last week

It is the latest move in a long battle between Parks Victoria and the Australian Brumby Alliance, which thinks the horses are part of High Country heritage and should be allowed to roam freely.from the alpine area which was due to come into effect today. "We'll rescue and keep them out of the national park until such a time that we can resolve this issue," Mr Tilley said."There are only about 100 brumbies up there on the Bogong High Plains," he said.

Mr Tilley said the animals caused damage, but another method of managing them should be found, instead of shooting.

How would there's people like to. Be shot sad for our government to do this shame on them 💯🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡👿👿👿👿👿👿👿👿👿👿😡😟🤔😡😟😬😡🤔😟🤔

I Feel so proud of these people! Australian Heroes SavingBrumbies 🐎🇦🇺❤️

It is a shame, but they are destroying the fragile high country. It's a choice between the brumbies and our native flora and fauna.

look, I love horses & have been smitten by brumbies since I could read, but they don't belong in a national park. Neither do the cattlefolks or their stock. Mustering is hugely stressful, so if they're going to be culled afterwards it's doubled trauma.

They need to be managed effectively so that they don’t destroy critical habitat for the endangered Corroboree frog. Brumbies aren’t an endangered species. If effective management means an aerial cull then so be it.

Only the very lowest of humans could shoot horses. I pity those whose memories will include shooting these animals. Let the eco-fantasists pull the trigger if their dreams of wilderness mean that much to them.

Thank you

Ah.. the romance of wild horses galloping across mountains; trampling fragile vegetation, compacting soils, eating out some species, destroying streams & wetlands, introducing weeds, causing erosion, destroying habitats of our unique native plants & animals.... in National Parks!

Both brumbies and cattlemen are a threat to the high country.

aussiejackie Awesome... Please, save thd Brumbies

The story of the Brumbies concerns me, hope they can save them from being shot. Saw these wild brumbies a number of years back and thought 'What beautiful Animals.' Best of luck to the Mountain Cattlemen.

Previous effort to shoot out the Brumbies have had very limited success.

There're a feral animal they need to go.

I can understand the need to cull but mustering them and then trying to find a better strategy sounds like a much better solution. 🐎

Fence them or shoot them

DanielAndrewsMP leave the Brumbies alone. Again I have to ask, don't you like animals? You seem to not mind having them killed in your state.

Don't kill the brumbies
