A Melbourne father hopes to escape conviction over the deaths of his daughter and son-in-law, pleading not guilty due to mental impairment.

Osman Shaptafaj entered the plea at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court this morning and will face a directions hearing at the Victorian Supreme Court later this month.

His daughter Lindita Musai and her husband Veton were shot at the Yarraville property on New Year’s Eve. Police allege the couple, who had been married for one year, were ambushed on the veranda by Mr Shaptafaj. Ms Musai, 25, was killed instantly. Mr Musai, 29, died from his injuries on New Year’s Day. Mr Shaptafaj, 55, was found a short distance away suffering gunshot wounds.The young couple had just returned from a holiday to celebrate their first wedding anniversary.They were laid to rest on January 4 at a funeral attended by hundreds of family and friends.“Veton, my Best Friend, Brother, Golden Brother.

“Always using your crazy sense of humour to be the centre of attention. You taught me to never give a damn what people think of you as long as you were happy.”“Lindita. My beautiful, loving, caring, sweet, kind and angelic sister. You were the diamond in our family, our princess,” he wrote.
