Local law enforcers are now being investigated for their handling of the case of Ahmaud Arbery, who was chased down and fatally shot in Georgia.

For many Americans, Arbery’s killing harks back to the old Jim Crow days when white mobs hunted black men down and killed them with impunity. In Brunswick, the shooting has sparked an uneasy conversation about race and power.

Many have expressed frustration with the investigation, suggesting the defendants’ race and law-enforcement ties protected them until the video was shared and outrage grew. Gregory McMichael is a former Glynn County police officer who worked 20 years as a district attorney’s investigator before retiring last year.
