On Monday morning former finance minister Trevor Manuel strongly criticised both the lockdown regulations and the army. He isn’t the first and won’t be the last to do so. Pressure against the regulations is growing as support for them dwindles.

by South Africa’s former finance minister Trevor Manuel, in which he warned that we should not allow our freedoms to be removed during the national lockdown. Rather movingly, he described the plight of a taxi driver who was in the same cell as he was in the 1980s, and how he ended up in jail simply because he had questioned the actions of a police officer. Manuel’s point was that the Constitution is not suspended during this time, and that people should not accept any loss of their rights.

In his interview, Manuel also spoke about the economy. “We must ensure that the economic rules are rational and I think that a lot of the decisions that have been taken don’t pass the test of rationality, what you can buy, what you can’t buy, doesn’t work. And then I think the third part is the general appeal for reasonable conduct that extends to the police and army.

While Manuel is no longer in government, and no longer holds any high office in the ANC, his opinions still carry weight. He has a veteran leadership role, and understands the economy and our society. For the moment, those who would normally speak up for the business constituency have been quiet. Business Unity SA has not said very much. The group was an important part of the process of drawing up government’s economic response to the crisis.

What is important here is that Manuel may well give other figures, in business and other parts of society, political cover to push for restrictions to be eased. If someone had made this point over the weekend, they might have been accused of being a supporter of the DA . Now, they can point to Manuel. Certainly, it will make it harder for people to dismiss the argument from the get-go.

I wonder who call this WMC dog leader or will follow any of his call except those begging for Stellenbosch BEE tenders or those they paid CR17 bribes to...

Why?

Moer the dog until the house negro and owner come out. We been knew. Happy days are here.

TSEK blood dripping sellout

Where and how can I stand up for this country and its people i love so much?

We can only hope!

He is the trusted Rodchild Mafia Puppets.

A few hundred million between him and Maria has allowed him to be a bit anti. Wonder how much they got stashed off shore through ABSA.

Cyril lied 🤥

Why is a Rothschild puppet telling the public to stand up against lockdown? Doesn't feel right.

Hence people in WC are dying like flies, shame in these morons who only think for themselves

Please to see Manual experience the disaster he help create

Dear Mr Manuel, I respect u as an individual and the role u played in the struggle and in government. When u were a finance minister you took decisions that never went well with the unions but u were supported regardless. Now allow yourself to be led and stop the criticism.

Maybe government should consider speeding up its announcement of going to level 3, or an announcement may not be necessary at all.

The Head Of Rothschild Africa has spoken let's just wait and see how Cyril Afrikaner Broederbond puppet plays things

He should have stood up for the people of Marikana

I agree with Trevor....

It's about time to see racists, beneficiaries of apartheid and the privileged toy toying for the first time because they no longer make profit

It was never our economy, so how has COVID19SouthAfrica automatically coopted us into being concerned about an economy that isn't ours? PresidencyZA CyrilRamaphosa Magashule_Ace DDMabuza Julius_S_Malema RonaldLamola DrBladeNzimande ButiManamela FloydShivambu KhuselaS

kevinbh1 He’s right. We cannot lose our freedoms and have the constitution ignored. I hope there is a chain reaction. I’m terrified of this virus. I, and many in my family p, are compromised but we cannot continue this brutal lockdown in light of a virus that cannot currently be cured.

Is there anyone challenging the curfew

The most dangerous people in this country are not the minority instigating retrogressive and capitalistic acts in the midst of a disaster, but those media houses, journalists and celebrated natives who do the trojan acts for them.

SKettledas Manuel knows which side his bread is buttered, comes as no surprise his utterances masquerading as a plight for the ordinary South African StayHome

He has no consistency! I wonder who will stand with him!! 😹😹😹😹

You are lying to yourself.

Can oom Trevor just run for president and get it done with?
