MANILA - Retired Supreme Court Senior Justice Antonio Carpio on Wednesday stressed the importance of a free press in a democracy as he said ABS-CBN Corp's only remedy was to seek a temporary restraining order against government's directive to stop its broadcast operations.

"Or there has to be an exception carved from that. So I think the best for ABS-CBN is to go to the Supreme Court and ask for a TRO against the NTC order, and get an amendment or a reversal of that decision, Associated Communications vs NTC,” he said. Lawmakers have also said several media companies have been operating using provisional authority while their licenses to operate were still pending in Congress.
