Former Republic of Ireland and Celtic footballer Anthony Stokes has appeared before Dublin District Court charged with a serious assault

Garda Donal O'Neill gave evidence of arresting Mr Stokes at Pearse Street Garda Station this afternoon.

Garda O'Neill told the court the Director of Public Prosecutions has directed summary disposal meaning the case should stay in the district court and not be dealt with in the circuit court, which has tougher sentencing powers. His solicitor Peter Corrigan said his client would accept summary disposal of the case.

Garda O'Neill told the court that it is alleged that the accused head-butted Fraser Spratt once, knocking him to the ground and causing him to lose consciousness for a short time on 16 March 2019 in Fitzgerald's bar in Dublin 2.The charge is under section three of the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person Act.

Mr Stokes, who has an address at Wyckham Point, in Dundrum, Dublin 14, "made no reply to the charge", the court heard. Mr Corrigan said his client denies the charge and pleads that he was acting in self defence at all times. These are that while in Ireland he reside at the address provided, that he inform the court if accepting an offer of employment abroad and give the name and address of the employer, and that he remains available at the number he has provided to gardaí.
