Lawyers call for criminal proceedings to resume with restricted access

Lawyers say criminal courts with restricted access should be allowed to function during the MCO period not only for matters involving remand, fresh charges, bail and revision applications, but also for matters involving appeals and miscellaneous applications. – The Malaysian Insight file pic, April 27, 2020.

TO ensure continued access to justice during the extended movement control order , criminal proceedings should be continued with restricted access, said the legal fraternity. Prominent lawyer N. Sivananthan said the authorities should allow criminal courts to operate by allowing only allowing relevant parties such as the judge, prosecutor, lawyer and the accused person to be present.

Allow law firms to operate during MCO, says Malaysian BarKUALA LUMPUR (Bernama): The Malaysian Bar has called on the government to provide leeway to law firms to operate during the movement control order (MCO) period. No they shouldn't. They are not essential for survival. If they r allowed, then the government have to allow for other professional services like accountancy, engineering, insurance which are even more critical than legal services.
