In the world's first criminal case against members of the Assad regime in Syria, two defendants stand trial in Germany, where they now live, for crimes against humanity.

Two suspected members of President Bashar al-Assad's security services have had charges of torture and sexual assault read out against them in a German court, in what lawyers say is the first trial for war crimes by Syrian government agents.

Arabic interpreters repeated the charges to the suspects, identified by their first names only under German privacy laws. They have brought the case under universal jurisdiction laws that allow Germany to try crimes against humanity committed anywhere in the world. International lawyers have said they believe it is the first case anywhere against suspected officials in Assad's government for such crimes.

What a joke..'the Assad regime' is a popularly elected, legitimate government. They have been defending their country for years, against Western-backed Islamic headchoppers - many of whom have found refuge in Europe. It's beyond hypocrisy.

Dear SBS - why do you refer the “Assad regime” despite the presence of elections? Those (questionable) elections are in the same ballpark as Israel’s phony elections. When will you start referring to the “Netanyahu regime”? Or do prefer being a tool for western propaganda?
