Police are looking into whether NSW Police Minister David Elliott broke the law, after a photo surfaced of him firing a submachine gun at a rifle range for prison officers.

The fully-automatic weapon is illegal in NSW, except for use by the army and some police and corrections officers

It was one of a series of pictures posted on Mr Elliott's official Facebook page in September 2018 to mark the opening of the range at the John Morony Correctional Centre near Windsor in Sydney's North West. The rifle range is designed to provide specialised firearm training for prison officers. Submachine guns are illegal in NSW, except for use by the army and some police and corrections officers.

This is nit picking BS. Someone has got it in for him and are trying anything to get him

I’m sure that the victims of crimes that going unsolved whilst scarce police resources are being wasted on this will feel reassured. Unbelievable that they are investigating whether he signed the correct form.

Well, if the shooters have to do the paperwork, so should the govt departments...

He's the Minister, you idiots, this exposes the growing extremism of Oz gun regulations, which only affect law-abiding shooters.

He fired a gun at a shooting range. Who cares? Guns scare the shit out of Australians 😔

Does 'making steps to correct an administrative error' mean getting paperwork sorted and backdated? Just wondering.

It was a photo op by the relevant minister at a site operated by his department. Talk about nit picking. It’s this sort of rubbish that makes politicians look like they are playing games and wasting time, money and resources as this “investigation” now will. Talk about big issues

A police minister? I totally approve of this action. He should be doing virtue signalling, not handling machine guns 🤓

I totally saw head line and thought, 'what the hell is a submarine gun'?
