Editorial: The Morrison government's proposed religious 'freedom' bill, if enacted, will undermine long-held legal protections against discrimination

Born out of the contentious debate over same-sex marriage, the religious discrimination bill was always going to attract its fair share of attention. The Morrison government has now released two drafts of the bill and, based on the response from a broad array of groups, appears no closer to finding the right balance.

But then, in a remarkable about-face, the same bill sets about giving religious organisations and individuals the ability to override such precedents so long as it's in good faith with their doctrines, tenets, beliefs or teachings, including the right to discriminate against someone to “avoid injury to the religious susceptibilities of adherents” to the religion.

While the second draft largely placated the church groups, extending the bill to include hospitals and aged care homes on the issue of the right to discriminate, essentially the same concerns exist.has condemned the second draft, voicing its concern that it appeared "to reduce patient safeguards and derogate patients’ rights to access health care, while also undermining the rights of some doctors by enabling employers to discriminate against them based on religious belief".

Would not need consideration if political correctness, identity politics and social engineering weren’t undermining traditional values.....progressive Left the catalyst.

Defeat this draconian Bill.

Also, s116 of our Constitution prohibits the Commonwealth from making laws in respect of religion.

In Trumpland this was was a reply to religious freedom. Perhaps Scotty from Sales could do with a desk version to match his Stopping the Boats trophy.

I see the Aussies have decided to import bad ideas from the Trump fascists here in the USA. How sad.

Seems fair. Will I get a reciprocal right to discriminate against religions? That would be fair.
