OPINION: When China says 'win-win', it really means 'let's negotiate'. But human rights are not to be traded away

Amnesty International has repeatedly documented people and communities being marginalised and put at risk by development projects.

It is here we find Beijing's very clear motivation for entering the human rights debate at all: it is entirely self-serving.When China says critics are"interfering in internal affairs", it really means human rights obligations can be ignored if it is in the national interest. But when Mr Xi has been urged to address human rights concerns, rather than listening, Beijing has gone on the attack.
