Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra on Wednesday (Feb. 19) welcomed moves to have Bureau of Immigration (BI) officials and personnel undergo lifestyle checks over allegations of receiving bribes from Chinese nationals to easily enter the country.

Sen. Risa Hontiveros made the call for a lifestyle check following revelations in a recent Senate inquiry on Philippine offshore gaming operations that a number of BI officials and personnel were engaged in illegal escort services for arriving Chinese nationals.

“Be that as it may, I support Sen. Hontiveros’ recommendation to conduct such a lifestyle check on suspected corrupt personnel of the BI, in the same way that lifestyle checks are conducted on suspected BIR , BoC , and other government officials and employees.” “I am deeply alarmed, hearing reports from the good senator, that this escorting modus is still persistent in our airports,” Morente said.
