Robyn Peoples, 26, and Sharni Edwards, 27, tied the knot in an afternoon ceremony in a hotel in Carrickfergus, near Belfast, after the new legislation came into effect on Monday.
The pair paid tribute to the activists from the Love Equality campaign who led the years-long push to liberalise the British-ruled province's marriage laws."Without you, our wedding wouldn't have been possible," they said. "We will be forever thankful."British MPs in London passed legislation last July, while Northern Ireland's devolved government was suspended, to allow gay marriages and same-sex civil partnerships.
In the meantime, Northern Ireland's political parties also agreed to restart power-sharing in Belfast. They blamed a "religious battle" between local politicians for the years of delay in being able to wed.
