Schiff calls Dershowitz arguments on a president’s foreign policy powers ‘constitutional madness’ by jonward11

“There is no limiting principle to the argument we heard last night,” Schiff, D-Calif., said during the impeachment trial in the Senate chamber. “It’s astounding.”

Schiff was referring to arguments made Wednesday evening by Dershowitz on behalf of Trump’s defense. An emeritus professor at Harvard Law School, Dershowitz asserted that if a president exchanges in a quid pro quo with a foreign power in order to help himself get reelected but also perceives it to be in the public interest, that alone is not enough to impeach that president.

Dershowitz argued that history is filled with examples of a presidents acting simultaneously to benefit the country as well as his own political prospects. The statement from Dershowitz that drew the most attention was this: “If a president does something which he believes will help him get elected — in the public interest — that cannot be the kind of quid pro quo that results in impeachment.”Story continues“It means that a president could break any law or abuse any power and say that it was for the public interest because the public interest would be served by his or her election,” Erwin Chemerinsky, a prominent law professor, told NBC News.

Dershowitz attempts to clarify controversial argument about presidential powersTrump's attorney Alan Dershowitz claimed the media twisted his words when he controversially argued that a president could engage in a quid pro quo for personal political benefit as long as the president believes their reelection is in the public interest LOL, no walkbacks. We ALL heard him loud & clear. He was so passionate about a president being able to do basically anything, as long as he thought it would help his election/re-election efforts, even soliciting help from foreign governments (which is illegal & unconstitutional) He is a criminal defence attorney, why is he there defending trump! They say impeachment is political! We have this man as a teacher of future lawyers, I hope they find other teacher! From what Constitution is he being study his theories to defend trump, I guess from Russia's! Dershowitz hides behind the cloak of everyone is entitled to a scorched earth defence no matter what the fallout. Like all of us he will soon be gone and forgotten.
